Experience – I worked for over 20 years as an educator with disadvantaged youth teaching literacy in Colorado, Arizona and California. I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in Education from Concordia University in Montreal Canada and my Master’s Degree in Social Work from San Diego State University. I taught English as a Second Language in Guadalajara, Mexico and speak English, French and Spanish. I served in the Canadian Military and also worked at a YMCA summer camp for kids.

I chose to be a therapist because I want to help others overcome challenges and live their best life. I believe everyone has the capacity to learn, grow and succeed and my goal is to help empower individuals to develop the knowledge and skills to grow and become the best version of themselves.

Approach – My goal is to provide a safe space for people to talk about their lives including successes, challenges and obstacles whatever they may be. I am very strengths-based and I believe that everyone has skills and talents that can be used to help things get better. Therapy is a safe place where people can unpack and process their life experiences as well as learn healthy ways of coping to live a healthy and happy life. I enjoy working with children, youth and adults as well as individuals with disabilities including Autism and ADHD.

Experience – I have experience as a Substance Abuse Counselor assisting parents whose children had been removed from the home to recover from addiction and alcoholism and reclaim their children. I have worked in a State Hospital with the chronically mentally ill to help them come to understand their mental illnesses, their relapse triggers, and strategies for coping with their symptoms. I have also worked with the Prison population as they work to understand how they came to commit their crimes, accept responsibility for their actions and learn to live as a law-abiding citizen.

Approach – I am a frequent user of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy exploring the connections between Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviors. I believe that all people have the right to live in a safe environment, have adequate medical care, good nutrition, the support of others, and an opportunity to work, play and find joy. Joseph Olvera

LMFT

Hello, my name is Joseph Olvera, LMFT. I have worked in the area of community mental health for more than a decade. My specialties are working with individuals, including children and families, who have experienced trauma. I also work with a variety of other issues, including depression, ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, parent-child relational issues, attachment issues, and many more.

Experience – When I was young, I always knew I wanted to work in a profession where I was helping people in a deep and personal way. This led me to a career in the field of community mental health, where I worked with at-risk youth in a variety of settings. I loved the idea that I could help someone discover parts of themselves that were always there, but they never thought to use to solve their own problems. I’m just there listening – I’m present at the moment with my clients.

Approach – I use a combination of Person-Centered Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to assist clients in exploring how they can build the skills necessary to make meaningful changes in their lives. I believe the client has the potential within themselves to uncover strengths they didn’t know they had. I also use Mindfulness to help people gain awareness and insights into their own experiences. This can help in noticing the subtle judgments we place on ourselves and how this shapes the lens we see the world through.

What is a first appointment like with me? I start by understanding the issues from your perspective and by asking questions that help me understand the way the world looks from your point of view. Most of the time, by the end of the first session, I have a good understanding of the primary issues, so we can work together in resolving them. Hopefully, by the time you walk out, you would feel like there is someone else on your journey with you.
